Description:

Dive into the world of encaustic painting in this immersive adult summer camp art course. Encaustic painting, an ancient technique dating back to the Greeks and Egyptians, involves the use of molten beeswax infused with pigment to create luminous, textured artworks. Led by experienced encaustic artist Jana Gering, this course offers a unique opportunity to explore the versatility and beauty of this medium in a relaxed and supportive environment.

This intensive week-long course will allow participants to discover the rich history and fundamental techniques of encaustic painting while unleashing their creativity through hands-on experimentation. From building layers of translucent color to incorporating mixed media elements, students will learn a variety of methods for manipulating wax to achieve stunning visual effects. 

Each day will be filled with dynamic demonstrations, guided exercises, and studio time for individual exploration with the tools and materials Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with hotplates, torches, brushes, irons, carving tools, and mark-making implements, to discover their own unique artistic voice within the encaustic medium.

  • Understanding the properties of wax and pigment options and how to choose which technique will work in various situations.

  • Creating luminous translucent layers and vibrant textures.

About the instructor

Jana Gering has studied and worked in encaustic painting for over 12 years. She also works in watercolor, mixed media, printing, and acrylic painting. Jana’s work in encaustic includes intuitive abstract work, often mixing collage, texture, and sculptural work, and she loves to introduce people to the promise and challenges of painting with wax.
