Embark on a captivating artistic journey in our introductory course, Exploring Gel Plate Printing: Unleashing Creative Potential. This course is tailored for artists, printmakers, and enthusiasts eager to delve into the dynamic world of gel plate printing, a versatile and exciting medium.

In this class you’ll learn:

  • Fundamentals of Gel Plate Printing: Begin with the basics. Learn about gel plates, their properties, and how they interact with different types of inks and papers. Understand essential techniques for creating captivating prints.

  • Layering and Texture Techniques: Dive deeper into the art of layering. Discover how to build complex compositions through the strategic application of color, texture, and pattern. Experiment with various tools and materials to create dynamic effects.

  • Monoprinting and Reproducibility: Uncover the magic of monoprinting. Explore techniques for creating unique, one-of-a-kind prints while also learning how to reproduce and adapt your designs for artistic projects.

  • Incorporating Mixed Media: Elevate your prints with mixed media elements. Experiment with collage, stenciling, and hand-painting to add depth and dimension to your gel plate creations.

Prerequisites: This course is open to artists, printmakers, and individuals with a passion for exploring new artistic techniques. No prior experience in gel plate printing is required, but a willingness to experiment and an enthusiasm for creative expression are essential.

Materials:

  • 8x10 gel plate or 5x7 gel plate from Gel Press or Gelli Arts.

  • Brayer. I like the Essdee standard roller.

  • Acrylic paint. Liquitex Basics or Amsterdam are my favorite. Michael’s has good deals on these often.

  • Paper. Have lots on hand! Any smooth non-glossy paper, like copier paper, is great. Raid your recycling bin first—we’ll be making lots of messy prints and this is a good way to make sure you’re not being precious with your work.

  • (optional) Translucent papers, such as deli paper, coffee filter paper, tracing paper, wet strength art tissue, etc. (Artist Sally Hirst has a great list. Be sure to check out her classes too!)

  • A cheap sketchbook big enough to hold your prints and glue/tape to adhere prints inside. We’ll make LOTS of prints and this is the easiest way to store them.

Note: These will all be provided for the in-person class. A $20 supply fee will be collected day-of.
